Unveiling of the memorial “Incendiary bomb in the Kocher riverbed”

In memory of the victims of all wars and as a reminder to the living – exactly 80 years after the first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, Frederick Brütting, Mayor of Aalen, Andreas Seydelmann, Managing Partner of Maschinenfabrik Seydelmann KG, and Dr. Georg Feuerbach, City Archivist of Aalen, jointly unveiled a memorial on the banks of the Kocher River.

Shortly before the end of the war in 1945, American fighter bombers attacked the Proviantamt, where the Wehrmacht stored supplies. However, the target was largely missed and a bomb also hit the grounds of Maschinenfabrik Seydelmann KG. For a long time, this crater was used as a pond, at times with fish and swimming facilities.

In 2023, during the renaturation of the Kocher, the remains of an incendiary bomb from this attack were recovered and, thanks to financial support from Maschinenfabrik Seydelmann, were converted into this memorial.
